On March 9, 2011 Jim and Joyce Van Schaack and friend, Carol Gilles, met at The Reagan Ranch Center – Young America’s Foundation in Santa Barbara, California. Marilyn Fisher, curator for The Reagan Ranch, located about thirty miles from the Foundation office, was our driver and tour guide for our trip to the Reagan Ranch or Rancho del Cielo. The trip was made mostly by freeway, but toward the end we had to travel about seven miles on narrow unpaved roads.

A huge rainstorm hit Reseda California in 1955 and the Van Schaack’s neighborhood became a river. Streets and yards were flooded.

The entire Van Schaack family visits Pioneer Village in Bakersfield, California. Pioneer Village is a great way to spend an afternoon in Bakersfield with its historical buildings from Kern County’s past, including the old Norris School, a one room building, or the newest addition, The Lopez House. The Kern County Museum is a history museum located in Bakersfield, California. Its main focus is the history of Kern County. One of the prominent features is Pioneer Village. Located on 16 acres, it contains over 50 original buildings from around the county, related to life in the late 19th century. Wikipedia
